CANCER CROSSING ASSISTS SOUTHWESTERN MANITOBA LYMPHOMA PATIENT WITH TRAVEL AND HOSPITAL PARKING

Cancer Crossing has assisted a gentleman from the southwest corner of Manitoba.  He has a relapsed lymphoma and has been admitted to hospital in Winnipeg for a stem cell transplant.  Once discharged, he will need to remain in Winnipeg for at least six weeks.

He is self-employed and has no sick benefits.  His wife is applying for EI caregiver benefit so income is very limited.  He and his wife have secured subsidized accommodation in Winnipeg and are doing all they can to find sources of financial aid as they still need to maintain their home in rural Manitoba while in Winnipeg.

Cancer Crossing has made a contribution to this patients cost of travel to Winnipeg for treatment and hospital parking as he is struggling greatly.  We hope his treatment is successful and that he is successful in finding other sources of financial support to keep him and his wife fiscally above water.

CANCER CROSSING ASSISTS CERVICAL CANCER PATIENT WITH GROCERIES

Hi again everyone, as previously mentioned, during the pandemic we continue to assist cancer patients who are struggling financially, we are however, still slow posting about support we have provided.
The following is another support we provided prior to the start of Covid-19 in our region.

Cancer Crossing has assisted a northern Manitoba woman with cervical cancer who is receiving treatment in Winnipeg for six weeks.  She is staying in subsidized housing while in the city.  She is retired and lives on CPP and OAS but those funds are exhausted and she needs help with groceries.  Her advocate suggested that rather than providing her with a cheque, gift cards to a grocery would be the better way to help. We understand that every persons situation is different and people are complex. Cancer Crossing provided grocery store gift cards to her advocate who would ensure they are used for food.

CANCER CROSSING ASSISTS BC SON WITH AIR TRAVEL TO SEE FATHER WITH TERMINAL CANCER IN MANITOBA

Greetings! As previously mentioned, we are behind on our postings letting you know how we have helped (VERY behind). For the next several months, our reports of assistance provided will be for cases before Covid-19. We will note that from time to time, especially in situations that involve travel support. You will see below what we mean.

Cancer Crossing has assisted a British Columbia man with the cost of airfare to Winnipeg so that he can get out to see his father who has terminal cancer in Western Manitoba. The son has been trying to make it out to Manitoba monthly as his father has declined. The cost of airfare has added up to the point where it's getting harder and harder to come out and see his dad, and as time goes on, the need gets greater.
We hope that our support is timely enough that this son can get to see his father one more time before he passes.

CANCER CROSSING ASSISTS WITH TRAVEL AND MEDICATION FOR RECTAL CANCER PATIENT

Hi everyone - we are coming out of our Covid slowdown! We have continued to support patients throughout the pandemic but are far behind on our Social Media postings. Hopefully we can get back into the groove quickly, letting you know how we are helping cancer patients.

Cancer Crossing has assisted a woman in a Winnipeg bedroom community. She has rectal cancer and has had surgery, chemo/radiation and is completing her remaining chemo.
She lost her employment just prior to her diagnosis and her EI benefits are ending. She has no disability insurance. She is seeking employment but the gap in her resume and her need to recover is understandably causing issues. She is doing everything to help herself, including moving in with family yet she continues to struggle financially. She is struggling with the cost of travel to her treatment and medication costs.
Cancer Crossing has made a contribution towards her travel and medication expenses.

CANCER CROSSING STILL ASSISTING PATIENTS DURING COVID-19! RECTAL CANCER PATIENT ASSISTED WITH FUEL COSTS FOR RURAL TREATMENT TRAVEL

Hi everyone - just an update to let you know that the team at Cancer Crossing is doing well, and we hope that you and your families are also well!

Cancer Crossing is continuing to accept requests for assistance and we are continuing to process them. The process is all done remotely so we can continue to help cancer patients who are struggling financially as a result of their cancer diagnosis and subsequent cancer related expenses that have shifted them from 'managing financially', to 'struggling' financially.
We continue to be a group of volunteers so you might notice we are operating a little slower right now. Everyone is out of their normal routine and that includes all of us.

Cancer Crossing has assisted a Western Manitoba gentleman dealing with rectal cancer.  He lives in a very small community and must travel to one of the larger towns in the region for chemotherapy.  There are no volunteer drivers for the Wheels of Hope program in his area so he is driving the 200km return trip three times a week, every two weeks, by himself.  His sole income is pensions and his income is fixed and limited.  The cost of fuel for his travels to and from treatment are a financial stressor.
Cancer Crossing has made a contribution to his fuel costs to help alleviate the financial burden.

CANCER CROSSING CONTINUES TO ASSIST CANCER PATIENTS DURING THE COVID-19 CRISIS, ASSISTS BRAIN CANCER PATIENT WITH TRAVEL FOR RADIATION

Hello everyone -
We wanted to update you on what is happening with Cancer Crossing during these unprecedented and difficult times.

Cancer Crossing is continuing to accept requests for assistance and we are continuing to process them. The process is all done remotely so we can continue to help cancer patients who are struggling financially as a result of their cancer diagnosis and subsequent cancer related expenses that have shifted them from 'managing financially' to 'struggling' financially.
We continue to be a group of volunteers so you might notice we are operating a little slower right now. Everyone across the globe is trying to adjust daily to new circumstances and that of course, includes our group. We hope that you and yours are safe and virus free and continue to practice the recommendations as set forth by the medical professionals to keep us that way.

Cancer Crossing has assisted a northern Manitoba gentleman with brain cancer. He is unable to work, is single and has no children. He is living with his parents at this time.
He is able to access chemotherapy in his home community but will require radiation treatments in Winnipeg. He must somehow make his way to Winnipeg for radiation treatments and is struggling financially, wondering how he will be able to make this happen.
Cancer Crossing has provided him with some assistance towards his travel costs to Winnipeg.

CANCER CROSSING ASSISTS METASTATIC BLADDER CANCER PATIENT WITH TRAVEL COSTS FOR DIAGNOSTIC WORKUP

Cancer Crossing has assisted an Interlake gentleman with metastatic bladder cancer.  He is undergoing further staging prior to starting treatment.
He and his wife have a limited fixed income including retirement pension and one on disability.  They have endured significant financial hardship with travel expenses which have accumulated during his diagnostic workup.
The volunteer driving program is not available in his community so he has relocated himself to Winnipeg for improved access to care. This has increased his costs as now he has a Winnipeg accommodation expense.
Cancer Crossing has made a contribution to this patients travel expenses which accumulated during his diagnostic workup.

CANCER CROSSING ASSISTS MANITOBA OSTEOSARCOMA PATIENT WITH MEALS WHILE IN VANCOUVER GETTING SURGERY NOT AVAILABLE IN MANITOBA

Cancer Crossing has assisted a gentleman living in a town close to Winnipeg. He has osteosarcoma and has been receiving in-patient chemotherapy. He needs to travel to Vancouver to see an orthopedic surgeon as he needs surgery that is not available in Manitoba. Post surgery, he will have further chemotherapy.
Manitoba Health will reimburse him for his air travel to Vancouver but he is responsible for his own accommodation and meals while in BC. He has made plans to stay in the cheapest medical hostel he can find.
His EI sickness benefits are about to expire and there will be a transition period before his long term disability benefits start. Even with benefits, the reduction in his income will make it difficult to pay his expenses while in Vancouver.
Cancer Crossing has made a contribution towards his meals while he is in Vancouver.

He was living alone (having lost his wife to cancer) but has moved in with his daughter for additional support and care during his treatment.
He is retired, collecting CPP and OAS, so his income is fixed and limited.  He is concerned about his ability to cover the cost of travel to his medical appointments and to access his medications.  His daughter has been taking time off work to drive him to his appointments.  He is in the process of exploring other means of financial support but his need is now.

CANCER CROSSING ASSISTS WINNIPEG BREAST CANCER PATIENT WITH COMPRESSION GARMENTS

Cancer Crossing has assisted a Winnipeg breast cancer patient.

She has been self employed for almost two decades cleaning homes.  She has always tried to do her best in life by keeping her bills paid and giving back to her community through volunteer work.
Her diagnosis came out of the blue - the result of a mammogram and biopsy.  Her visit to CancerCare came at a time when she was happily anticipating the birth of a grandchild.  In her own words "My daughter had baby...I was so happy but so sad with emotions".  Very quickly surgery ensued.

Being self employed cleaning homes, her income was never substantial.  She did not opt for private insurance should a medical condition occur.  She has had to purchase compression garments to be worn post surgery for 6 weeks or so and the cost is a financial stressor to her.

Cancer Cancer has provided her with the funds for her compression garments.
