We are looking for someone fluent in website hosting, WordPress, PHP, HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript.

You would maintain our website by performing WordPress and plugin updates, providing ongoing testing including link scans, accessibility testing and design/content updates.

CANCER CROSSING ASSISTS RURAL CERVICAL CANCER PATIENT WITH URBAN ACCOMMODATION EXPENSE

Cancer Crossing has assisted a woman with cervical cancer from the Parkland region of Manitoba. She is receiving concurrent chemotherapy and radiation and needs to be in Winnipeg to receive her treatment. She is staying at a facility that has reduced rates for patients who live in the rural areas, but need to be in Winnipeg for treatment. Prior to getting ill she worked in retail. Her husband was self employed. She has applied for EI sickness benefits but her application seems to have hit a roadblock. Since her husband was self employed, he did not contribute to EI and he has since lost his income as he has taken time away from working to look after her. Not receiving any benefits has made it very difficult for them to manage their expenses. CANCER CROSSING ASSISTS MANITOBA PARKLAND LUNG CANCER PATIENT WITH TRAVEL COSTS FOR MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS

Update - our Cancer Crossing website is still down! We are getting a new web host and as volunteers, it's taking us a bit longer to get it back up. It will be back soon!

Meanwhile, Cancer Crossing has assisted another cancer patient who has fallen between the cracks.
He is a gentleman from the Parkland region of Manitoba.
He was getting by financially, but then he required trips to Brandon for a biopsy, then follow up, and now surgery for a lung cancer.
The cost of these trips have moved him from 'getting by' financially, to now experiencing considerable financial hardship.
Cancer Crossing has made a contribution to this patients travelling costs to help alleviate some of the financial pressure he is experiencing - he has enough to be concerned about having had a cancer diagnosis, and now the anticipation of surgery.

CANCER CROSSING ASSISTS LUNG CANCER PATIENT WHILE HE IS IN CPP DISABILITY LIMBO

Hi everyone, FYI, our Cancer Crossing website is temporarily down. We are getting a new web host and as volunteers, it's taking us a bit longer to get it back up. It will be back soon!

Meanwhile, Cancer Crossing has assisted a Winnipeg gentleman with Stage IV lung cancer.

Unfortunately, his first biopsy did not yield enough tissue to make a final diagnostic determination. As a result, he was unable to qualify for CPP disability, as the disability forms require the physician to indicate the treatment plan. With no firm diagnosis, there cannot be a treatment plan. He had to wait a period of time for a second biopsy and in the interim, was given emergency treatment for pain relief.
He has now received a Stage IV diagnosis and treatment has begun.

He is not only stressed from being in limbo regarding a diagnosis, but he is financially stressed as he has gone from being the primary breadwinner, to sitting in the passenger seat while his spouse works and they have two young adult children still at home.

Cancer Crossing has made a contribution to this family hoping his CPP disability is approved soon.

CANCER CROSSING ASSISTS WINNIPEG WOMAN IN TREATMENT FOR RECURRENT LUNG CANCER, WITH OVERDUE UTILITY BILL

Cancer Crossing has assisted a Winnipeg woman with recurrent lung cancer.

Her initial treatment plan called for a chemotherapy regimen after which she would return to part time work.  Her return to work was foiled when she was put on maintenance chemo which has left her fatigued and experiencing intermittent nausea.
She is 66 and has been working part time to supplement her OAS and small CPP in order to keep her bills up to date.  She had no workplace sick benefit and the 15 weeks EI sick benefit has ended. She has cut out any expense that is not an absolute necessity.  She has a child in university who cannot afford to help her out.
She is a hardworking and proud single woman who does not like to ask for help, but she has been unable to find part time work she can manage and is falling behind on her bills, resulting in a growing cloud of financial distress.
Cancer Crossing has provided a contribution to assist her with her overdue utility bill.

CANCER CROSSING CHOSEN AS BENEFICIARY OF A 'COST AND CAUSE' FUNDRAISER!

Cancer Crossing has been the beneficiary of a ‘Cost and Cause’ Fundraiser!  In case you are not familiar with these events, here is the scenario:

Lindsey Marie is a Winnipeg breast cancer patient.  She is a young woman with two young children.  Her friends and family got together and put on a ‘Cost and Cause’ Fundraiser on Saturday, May 11th at a local community centre.
The proceeds from the event are to go to the extra expenses Lindsey is facing due to her cancer treatment.  That is the ‘Cost’ part.
Lindsey then decided that a portion of the proceeds raised would go to a ‘Cause’ and in her case, she chose Cancer Crossing as the cause to support.

See photo from the event with Dr. Tse Li Luk (our Founder), Lindsey and her beautiful children, and one of our Outreach Volunteers, Kristine.  Lindsey is such a kind and caring young woman who sees beyond herself with concern regarding the community at large.  We cannot thank her enough for thinking of us as her 'Cause'.

If you know anyone with cancer who is struggling financially, please have them contact Cancer Crossing and we’ll see what we can do to help.  You might also think of putting on one of these events for your friend/family member.  Not only will it help them financially but you know the phrase, ‘it takes a Village to raise a child’, the same can be said for cancer patients.  The more friends and family who pitch in and offer support (in any way really) provide a circle of care (a Village if you will)  around the person – at a time when it is needed the most.

Our contact information is info@cancercrossing.com

CANCER CROSSING HELPS WITH MEDICATION COSTS AND NUTRIENT RICH FOODS

Cancer Crossing has assisted a Winnipeg gentleman with metastatic lung cancer.

He is undergoing chemotherapy and radiation and is currently on regular EI benefits. At this level of income, he can barely cover basic living expenses but he also has medications and is trying to eat a proper diet while on chemotherapy. In the meantime, he has been relying on soup kitchens and food banks for food donations but unfortunately, the food he receives from those sources are not nutrient rich as would be preferable for someone on chemo.

CANCER CROSSING PROVIDES 'FLEXIBLE FUNDING' FOR FAMILY OF YOUNG WOMAN WITH ACUTE MYELOID LEUKEMIA

Cancer Crossing has assisted a southwest Manitoba family whose young adult daughter has acute myeloid leukemia.
Her mother has been using her sick time from work to be in Winnipeg with her daughter, while her daughter has a stem cell transplant - which means a month long stay in the city.  This extended period from work and the expense of staying in Winnipeg is causing the family financial distress.
Post discharge, she would like to obtain a scooter for her daughter so that she can begin to get outside while being independently mobile.  Cancer Crossing has made a contribution towards the cost of the scooter.   If her daughter feels she can do without a scooter, the financial assistance will go towards the cost incurred to stay in Winnipeg for the month.
Cancer Crossing is pleased to be able to be a 'flexible funder'.  We understand circumstances can change quickly and we are not going to take our funding away should the daughter not require a scooter.  We are happy to have the contribution remain with the family and in this particular case, be used for travel expenses.

CANCER CROSSING ASSISTS METASTATIC LIVER CANCER PATIENT WITH FUNDS TOWARDS PURCHASE OF A MEDICAL SCOOTER

Cancer Crossing has assisted a Winnipeg gentleman with metastatic liver cancer.

Prior to his cancer diagnosis, he was already confined to a wheelchair for another health issue from long ago.
Cancer treatment has fatigued him enormously and he can no longer move the wheelchair himself which has greatly reduced his independence and he now relies on others to leave his home.
He is desperate to feel a sense of independence and with his low income cannot afford a medical scooter or electric wheelchair.
He does not meet the coverage criteria for financial aid for a medical scooter.  Cancer Crossing has made a contribution towards the purchase of a medical scooter.  He has sourced the lowest cost medical scooter he can find and is working hard to gather the rest of the funds as his loss of independence has demoralized him greatly.
