Young woman with cancer

 Cancer Crossing was contacted about a woman in her late 30s with cancer. She has 4 young children who need her and she is fighting hard to overcome her illness. A family member helped, but when they had to return home her husband took EI caregiver leave so that he could help her while she recovered from many surgeries, chemo, radiation and reconstruction. Unfortunately she had complications that lead to the need for more surgery. This family has been through a lot, including hours of driving to Winnipeg and long hospital stays. On top of it all, the EI payments are a tiny fraction of what they need to cover expenses. We were pleased to be able to offer some financial assistance that could give them a boost when they needed it most.

 Since this is a giving time of year, it is also a time of year when we at Cancer Crossing receive many thanks from recipients that we like to share with you, our supporters. One such thank you was from a woman that had an almost 4 hour drive for treatments. As you can imagine this got expensive very fast. She expressed her thanks to us, saying that not only did it help pay for transport, it helped towards meals for herself and her driver as treatment days were long days away from home. She found all the help that she received while undergoing cancer made a huge difference in her life. She was very grateful to all who came alongside to help.

Man with leukemia and colon cancer

 Imagine being a hard working person for your whole life. Then you get leukemia and colon cancer at the same time. You can't work anymore, you have a mortgage to pay, utility bills that you can't pay, your spouse is disabled and can't work and you don't know what you are going to do to get by. That's the situation a gentleman in eastern Manitoba found himself in. He had applied for mortgage insurance to take over and for CPP disability which were taking months to be approved. They found themselves going to the food bank as money was so tight. Luckily Cancer Crossing was contacted on his behalf and were able to provide a small cheque to help meet costs and keep him going to treatments.  We received thanks from another rural Manitoban when we assisted them with their travel expenses. The cost of travel to the nearest cancer treatment centre can add up quickly, eating into pensions, savings and sick leave payments. This person was so grateful that they could drive to treatment and not worry about the cost of gas. Their message to others was to not give up hope!

Cancer Crossing helps woman with breast cancer

 We at Cancer Crossing are pleased to help a Manitoban from the western part of the province. She is in her 70s and has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. She travels to Brandon for radiation and is staying there during the treatment, going home on weekends. Previously she made trips to Brandon for tests and scans. Since she and her husband are on CPP and OAS they have asked for financial help which we were glad to give. We wish her all the best for a return to good health!

Cancer Crossing assists with long distance travel

 Cancer Crossing has been able to assist a man in his 60s, undergoing treatment for rectal cancer. He lives in a small town near Lake Winnipeg. He is on EI sick benefits while he gets chemotherapy and radiation in Winnipeg. His partner is disabled and cannot work. You can imagine the financial pinch they find themselves in as they pay for long distance travel and are on decreased income. Luckily their cancer social worker reached out on their behalf. First Trivia Night fun

 On November 7th, Cancer Crossing had it's first ever Trivia Night fundraiser. It was a sell out! Lots of fun was had as teams competed for bragging rights and a few prizes. There was a silent auction with great prize baskets. Calabria Pizza kept us fed with yummy pizzas and salad and cake. Today we are posting all the photos to prove it!

Thank you Cancer Crossing!

 What a heartfelt thank you we received! A recipient wrote that Cancer Crossing's support gave him both emotional and financial support. The monetary gift made him feel valued and seen at a very difficult time and was enough money to pay for five round trips to treatment, which made a huge difference for him.

His advice to others was to remain positive, to speak openly and honestly with doctors and said that there are no stupid questions.

He also felt supported by the positive and kind interactions he had with all staff at Cancer Care. He said the professionalism, kindness, support and compassion from everyone from the receptionists, to nurses, techs, and doctors made the cancer treatment easier to bear.

We are glad to read such a positive report, despite all he has gone through, and he ended his comments with a BIG thank you.
