Cancer-causing infections
Last week CBC news published a surprising story that stated a high number of cancers worldwide were caused by infections. This serves to remind us to guard our health even from something seemingly innocuous like a mild viral illness. The study said that up to 1 out of every 8 cancers is caused by infection, meaning that over 2 million cancers per year are infection related. This is turning what we thought we knew about cancer on it's head. Here are some excerpts from the news story:

Western Manitoba woman receives help
A few months ago Cancer Crossing was asked to provide financial assistance to a woman living near Riding Mountain National Park. She is in her early 60s and has uterine cancer. She lives on a small pension that she supplements with work hours, as she is able to do so. Sometimes weather prevents her from travelling to work, and sometimes her health impacts that. She also lives far from both Brandon and Winnipeg and sometimes she has to travel to one of those locations for treatment or for surgery. This is a financial burden due to her limited income. Fortunately her Oncology social worker contacted us to request help, which we were pleased to do. We so often take for granted that the health care we need will be accessible for us and this often is not the case. We appreciate all your donations so that Manitobans who must go long distances for care can do so. Please continue to help us do this important work by donating at https://cancercrossing.com/ Tax deductible receipts are provided.

Two friends with cancer
Cancer Crossing was asked to help support not only a man with lung cancer, but also his friends who had stepped in to assist him. One of those friends also has cancer and so they are fighting similar illnesses. The man with lung cancer was living in limited circumstances, in a small cabin without running water, electricity or heat except for a wood stove. He was quite weak from cancer and was unable to keep his home heated as he could not keep feeding the wood stove. Luckily his friends invited him to live in their home and also drove him to all his medical appointments and treatments, using their own finances to do so. How fortunate he was to have friends like these, that sacrificed for him and put their own finances in jeopardy to do so while they too were dealing with cancer themselves!
